Privative Negation in the Port Royal Logic
نویسنده
چکیده
In this paper I argue that negation in The Port Royal Logic is not a failed or incoherent 4 approximation of Boolean complementation as maintained by Sylvain Auroux and Marc Dominicy, 5 but is rather a version of privative negation from medieval logic, and that as such it has a perfectly 6 coherent semantics. The discussion reviews the critiques of Auroux and Dominicy as well as the 7 semantics of privative negation as found in Aristotle, Proclus, Ockham, Buridan, Descartes, and 8 Arnauld. 9 §

All Brutes are Subhuman: Aristotle and Ockham on Private Negation
The mediaeval logic of Aristotelian privation, represented by Ockham’sexposition of All A is non-P as All S is of a type T that is naturally P and no S isP, is critically evaluated as an account of privative negation. It is argued thatthere are two senses of privative negation: (1) an intensifier (as in subhuman),the inverse of Neoplatonic hypernegation (superhuman), which is st...
متن کاملEquality propositional logic and its extensions
We introduce a new formal logic, called equality propositional logic. It has two basic connectives, $boldsymbol{wedge}$ (conjunction) and $equiv$ (equivalence). Moreover, the $Rightarrow$ (implication) connective can be derived as $ARightarrow B:=(Aboldsymbol{wedge}B)equiv A$. We formulate the equality propositional logic and demonstrate that the resulting logic has reasonable properties such a...
متن کاملTruth Values and Connectives in Some Non-Classical Logics
The question as to whether the propositional logic of Heyting, which was a formalization of Brouwer's intuitionistic logic, is finitely many valued or not, was open for a while (the question was asked by Hahn). Kurt Gödel (1932) introduced an infinite decreasing chain of intermediate logics, which are known nowadays as Gödel logics, for showing that the intuitionistic logic is not finitely (man...
متن کاملA Study the Rupture in Royal Portraiture of Qajar era based on Michel Foucault’s Theory of Power
Royal Portraiture is one of the last Iranian miniature styles which more or less can be considered a Synthesis Style of Iranian and European elements. This style was inspired by Westernization, but underwent important changes during the Qajar era. In this research, one tries to analyze and interpret one of its ruptures that occurred in the era of Mohammad Shah. The main issue of the present pro...
